As a Boston Transplant to Richmond I miss the integrated public transit of a big city.  I would commute to work and school via bus and subway year round.  My wife was actually able to get around Boston without owning a car for 4+ years.  I know that Richmond has a bus system and I look forward to seeing the expansion of GRTC services.

My favorite way to get around is bicycling which I do for both fun and commuting.  It gives you the chance to be outdoors, get some exercise and not burn fossil fuels.  One of the things I don’t miss about Boston is trying to bicycle in a nebulous and often hazardous city.  Richmond is the relatively bike friendly environment.  There are many paved and unpaved bike paths that I am just now getting to know.  There is nothing better than heading out early on a Sunday morning for a long ride.  River-side drive is one of my favorites.  I am really excited about the Capitol Trail that will connect Richmond to Williamsburg.  I’m also looking into getting a mountain bike; I hear the trails along the James are fantastic.
